Liturgical Calendar 2020

YEAR A – WEEKDAYS II

The links below where possible are from 2017 for cycle A Sunday readings and 2018 for year II weekday readings except where otherwise noted or in cases where those liturgies were not celebrated in those years in which case earlier instances of that celebration may be used.  Links for Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter are from 2019. An attempt was made to make sure the commentaries and reflections were consistent with this liturgical year, however, I have not removed the optional memorials from these posts so those are not correct. The commentaries and reflections are updated daily throughout the year and this calendar will not reflect those updates.  For the most recent updates consult the current year archive.

The USCCB uses the weekday readings for most memorials and optional memorials.  In those cases, links are provided to both the weekday readings and the proper for the memorials.  There are some memorials where only the gospel from the proper is used (or in one case, the first reading and psalm are from the proper).  In those cases I have attempted to find a past instance where the correct readings are used.  In some cases I have constructed posts for these situations that have not been placed in the archive.  These will come up under the heading “Through the Eyes of Faith.”

YEAR B – WEEKDAYS I
Is 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7/1 Cor 1:3-9/Mk 13:33-37 (2) Pss I

[1] Citations indicating the proper week of the Psalter for the Liturgy of the Hours, or proper psalms, when applicable, designated by Pss I, Pss II, etc., or Pss Prop respectively, are included in this calendar.
[2] Optional Memorials are indicated by the use of italics within brackets.
[3] Note for December 17-24 links are to 2014 posts so the day of the week would be consistent.  If the reader wants the most recent edits, click on the “S.S. Commemoratio” footnote and select the most recent year.
[4] On Saturdays in Ordinary Time when there is no obligatory memorial, an optional memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary is allowed.[1] Mass texts may be taken from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, from a Votive Mass, or from the special collection of Masses for the Blessed Virgin Mary (Suggested is #26, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Image and Mother of the Church, II).
[5] The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.”
[7] From the special collection of Masses for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Suggested for this date: Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom, #24B.
[8] The following readings may be used on any Lenten day this week, especially in Years B and C when the Gospel of the Samaritan Woman is not read on the Third Sunday of Lent: Ex 17:1-7/Jn 4:5-42 (236).
[9] The following readings may be used on any Lenten day this week, especially in Years B and C when the Gospel of the Man Born Blind is not read on the Fourth Sunday of Lent: Mi 7:7-9/Jn 9:1-41 (243).
[10] The following readings may be used on any day this week, especially in Years B and C when the Gospel of Lazarus is not read on the Fifth Sunday of Lent: 2 Kgs 4:18b-21, 32-37/Jn 11:1-45 (250).
[11] If necessary, the Chrism Mass may be celebrated on a suitable day before Holy Thursday.
[12] Nine readings are assigned to the Easter Vigil: seven from the Old Testament and two from the New. If
circumstances demand in individual cases, the number of prescribed readings may be reduced. Three selections from the Old Testament, both from the Law and the Prophets, should be read before the Epistle and Gospel. In any case, the reading from Exodus about the escape through the Red Sea (reading 3) should never be omitted.
[13] Although not given the title of Solemnity, “[t]he first eight days of Easter Time constitute the Octave of Easter and are celebrated as Solemnities of the Lord” (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, no. 24).
[14] When the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the following Sunday, the Second Reading and Gospel from the Seventh Sunday of Easter (see no. 59) may be read on the Sixth Sunday of Easter.

¨[16] For this memorial, the Gospel from the weekday is used.
[17] Note: Saint Jane Frances De Chantal’s feast day was originally set on December 12th, it was perpetually moved to August 12th so it did not coincide with Our Lady of Guadalupe (also December 12th).
[18] Note: this weekday, while readings are from the day, has not been called Thursday of the Twenty-sixth Week since before 2006.
